Ignacio prides itself on being a tri-cultural community with Anglo, Hispanic and Native American residents. The influence of the Southern Ute Tribe is seen everywhere in Ignacio town. The tribe funds construction and recreation facilities that would otherwise be impossible for such a small town. Ignacio is the home of the Sky Ute Casino. The annual four corners motorcycle rally is also held at the Ignacio events center. Most homes in Ignacio are modest.

The Durango vicinity within La Plata county is the place to be for folks who want to be close to not right inside the action. The Animas Valley is convenient and picturesque enough to be a national park. North Animas valley provides convenient access to the rapidly growing Durango Mountain Resort.
